I have been a Michigan food stylist, based in the Detroit area, for more than twenty years. I began my career as a costumer in the theatre, but filled my daytime hours as a hand model. After working as a hand model on several shoots that included food, I was intrigued by the work of the food stylists on set.<\/p>\n
Once the theatre where I was employed closed, and I had a lot of free time, I began assisting food stylists and apprenticing as needed.<\/p>\n
After my son was born, that\u2019s when my love of food, beautiful food, began. I realized I could no longer just make a salad for dinner. A friend gave me a cookbook explaining how to make my own baby food. I never knew that was possible! (This is coming from the same person who, after she had gotten married, had to call her grandmother to ask her how to make a hot dog for her new husband!) I was not a life long cook!<\/p>\n
Once I learned the art of food styling, it\u2019s not just about the cooking, but the beauty and art of arranging food so that the important elements tell the story, I found a new career that has been just as fulfilling and joyful as was the theatre.<\/p>\n
A beautiful shot is not just about the food styling. Like in theatre, it is a team effort. The perfect steak is only perfect if someone can see it. It takes beautiful lighting, a talented photographer, creative director and assistants to help the client make his product a success.<\/p>\n
